LAMITAN CITY, Basilan (October 6, 2025) — Residents of Lamitan City and their local government unit together facilitated the shipment last week of 10 tons of relief supplies to Cebu for distribution to tremor-stricken residents in the northern part of the province.

No fewer than 70 villagers died from injuries caused by the collapse of structures in many areas in Cebu province that a 6.9 magnitude tremor rocked last week.

The LGU of Lamitan City, which got six Seal of Good Local Governance Award from the central office of the Department of the Interior and Local Government in the past seven years for its efficient public service thrusts, shipped the food packs, drinking water, hygiene kits and blankets to Cebu with the help of state agencies involved in relief works in the province.

“We, Lamiteños, stand along with our compatriot-Filipinos and the foreigners who suffered a lot from the earthquake that struck Cebu province. We wish for their recovery from that calamity,” Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Herrera Furigay told reporters on Monday, October 6.

Lamitan City in Basilan, which has more than 40 barangays, is home to mixed Muslim and Christian residents.

Basilan, a component-province of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, has two cities, Lamitan and Isabela, and 11 other towns.
